Bed talk!

I think I've found something along the lines of what I want to build for a headboard. I found some different Oak Beds and I really like the style of this one in the picture here. It looks like it's panelled, and that's along the lines of what I was thinking. I just don't think that I'll make it so deep as this one. I don't really want a ledge along the top. I want it to be closer to the wall, but that's do-able.

Of course I'm not going to make mine in oak either. I'll probably use a combination of some smooth finished pine and some MDF board for the panels. I want to paint it that dark espresso brown anyway, so it doesn't have to be made with high end lumber, but I will pay a little extra for the nicer pine for the frame of the headboard, so I don't have warped wood and splinters to contend with. I could even actually use more MDF for the frame, but I think I'm going to go with the pine.

I'm still going to try to work in my little bit of jazz too. What I want to do is insert a nice brushed nickel finished rod across the top of the headboard. Hopefully I'll be able to find something that will work. I was thinking that I'll check out some of the designer curtain rods to use for this. You know the kinds that you would put some cool finials on the ends? I haven't looked at curtain rods in a while, so I don't even know if they make them in a brushed nickel finish or even something that looks like that or not, but you see so much of this in all kinds of other accessories right now, so I'm hopeful. The new knobs I have for my dressers has this finish, so I would like to match that look and tie the headboard into my other furniture as well.

Did I mention...

Sometimes I just want to slap myself for getting into the predicaments that I manage to get myself into. Like for instance, did I ever mention that I hate painting those popcorn ceilings? Whoever invented those types of ceilings should be shot down and pissed on! I tell you, painting that ceiling in my bedroom was an absolute bitch.

Naturally I had to do two coats, because I haven't painted in there for awhile and the paint just soaked up into those nasty little popcorns... well those that didn't drop down on my head or in my face! Now before you say anything, I know I'm supposed to seal those bumpy little buggers with an oil based paint, but I hate painting with oil paint. The only type I will ever paint with is melamine paint, and that's only because I like what can be done with that type of paint, but regular old alkyd paint, forget it! I don't know what the problem was; why it took me so long to do this room's ceiling. I just seemed to whip through that job when I was doing my kitchen a few months ago. So now I'm feeling like I've been beat up. My wrists are killing me from pushing on that roller to get the paint into that nasty popcorn.

I was really hoping to get the walls all painted today, well, not the squares on the feature wall, but the other three walls, and the white base coat for under the squares. All I managed to get done other than the ceiling was the white base coat. Now mind you, I also did five loads of laundry and ran out on a couple errands. Oh well, tomorrow is another day!

House and Home

My sister's new place is really nice, although much smaller as far as storage goes from her old house. But then again they are scaling down to something a little smaller and easier to take care of as they are nearing retirement. She's 13 years older than me, and plans on retiring when she turns 60 in a few years.

She's got that knack for decorating, and has done a beautiful job of making this new house their home. Walking into her house is like walking into a setting right out of House and Home magazine! Her signature is in every room, and runs off into the yard as well. She's got some really neat things in her yard for decor. These most beautiful wrought iron art pieces that she has on a couple of the outside walls just amazed me. I've never seen anything so cool around here, but they're in all the garden shops out there. And their flower beds are just gorgeous. Again, she has that knack for placing her plants in the perfect spot and putting different plants together as well, so they compliment each other. One thing that really freaks me out too is how you can ask her the name of every single plant she has all around the yard, as well as any plant in her entire neighborhood and she she can rattle off the name of that plant immediately without any hesitation. And I'm not talking your run of the mill common flowers here either. No, I'm talking all kinds of different shrubs and various ornamental grasses.

She's so funny too. She's right into solar powered landscape lighting, and she had just bought some more up-lights the morning that I had arrived. So almost every evening when it got dark and the lights lit up, she was out there switching them around, and aiming the lights on different plants to illuminate them. I'll bet she's still moving them around now! They all looked nice wherever she put them, so my brother in law and I just started telling her that was perfect, just so she'd sit down and relax!
